What is EMS?

So, you think you could compete for your country in the SMS Olympics? You know how to send your girlfriend a @}--\--- (rose) and give your arch enemy a :^) (broken nose). Generally speaking, you think you are a pretty B-) (cool dude). Well, you need to GAL (get a life) as you are not such a G9 (genius) anymore. IOW (in other words) you have a new technology to embrace - EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) is here!

How to send an EMS message

If you have an EMS capable mobile, sending an EMS message is very simple. Enter the messages menu and write the text of your SMS message as usual. When you have finished, choose the "SEND ICON" button (or similar) to add EMS images and melodies from your mobile's pre-installed menu. You will then be prompted to choose your recipient's mobile number from your contact list. When you have done this, press send and your EMS message is on its way. It is that easy!

If you need any extra help on sending EMS messages, your mobile's user manual will explain what to do, step by step.

Once you get the hang of it, you'll find heaps of reasons to send EMS messages to your friends' EMS capable phones. For example, if you want to send a birthday greeting to your brother, you could choose a picture of a cake and send it accompanied by the "Happy Birthday" melody. Likewise, if you have just got a new pet, tell your friends about it by sending a playful tune and a puppy picture.

If you send an EMS message to a friend who doesn't have an EMS capable mobile they will still receive the SMS text part.

I'm bored with my in-built menu - are there any other options?

If you get bored of the images and melodies on your mobile's pre-installed menu there are a couple of different options:

1. Internet Downloads
The great thing about EMS is that you can download more images and melodies from websites such as www.enhancedmessaging.com and www.007emslogos.com. You normally have to pay for this service but it will give your EMS messages a real WOW! factor.

The other main benefit of having an EMS mobile as you can also use these websites to personalize your phone. Download a new logo or screen saver that shows your support for your football team or maybe a graphic of your favorite animal or travel destination.

2. Creating Your Own
You can also create your own images and melodies if your mobile has drawing or composing functions. Most EMS mobiles have extra slots in their image and melody menus for you to include your own touch of genius.

As more and more companies take advantage of the technology, EMS can offer you a whole new world of entertainment. For instance, very soon you may be able to gain access to sporting matches and night clubs after pre-purchasing tickets with your EMS mobile. A bar code will be sent to you in an EMS message which will be scanned at the venue's entrance.

EMS Vs. SMS Vs. MMS

If you have been reading right from the top, the benefits of SMS over EMS should be clear. While SMS transmits pure text, EMS is capable of transmitting text, pictures and melody and presenting them in a nice way (Refer to the birthday greeting example above).

While EMS transmits cartoon-like pictures and melodies made of the usual phone beeps, MMS is a whole lot more powerful.
